Contemporary portraiture exploring identity and the human condition.

Expressive paintings shaped by memory, cultural influence and lived experience. Working across oil, acrylic, spray paint and mixed media, Christopher Miles explores the relationship between outward appearance and the stories held beneath the surface..

Christopher Miles is a self-taught contemporary portrait artist based in Wiltshire, England.

His practice combines expressive brushwork with layered colour, exposed marks and unconventional surfaces. Reclaimed wood, paper and other materials become part of each portrait’s character, bringing their own texture and history to the work.

His subjects range from familiar cultural figures to more personal studies, connected by an interest in individuality, vulnerability and the complexity of being seen.

Identity, memory and cultural influence

The music, cinema and subcultures of the 1980s and 1990s provided the foundations for Christopher’s earlier work as ProperGanderArtist.

That collection explored the anti-heroes, icons and outsiders of those decades, considering how familiar faces become part of our own memories and identities. Its themes of rebellion, vulnerability and belonging continue to inform his developing practice.
